OpenAI says it will release an “open-weight” model

We’ve repeatedly pointed out how open source is becoming the dominant development and distribution model in the ultra-competitive AI race. That trend seems to be having an effect on the most prominent holdout.

OpenAI recently published a feedback form on its website in which it dropped the following bombshell: “We’re planning to release our first open language model since GPT‑2 in the coming months.” 

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman followed up the announcement by explaining that OpenAI is planning to release an “open weight language model with reasoning in the coming months”:

Though it’s notable that OpenAI did not use the term “open source” (which does not yet have a clear meaning in the context of machine learning models), the announcement is certainly a significant data point in what’s becoming an inescapable conclusion: open source is winning.
