Andy Ramirez of Docker offers some thoughts on factors that teams should consider in deciding when to transition from the free or community version of a COSS vendor’s software to a paid enterprise offering:

[F]or many enterprises, there comes a time when it’s best to graduate from the fully OSS version — where the cost is engineers, maintenance and infrastructure internally — and transition to the paid enterprise version where the costs and risks are pushed out.

COSS companies should pay close attention to these perspectives because they provide insight into the assessments of potential customers.

If a paid offering can ultimately save the customer time and money by eliminating the burden of management, security, building and maintaining infrastructure, etc., then transitioning to the paid offering is a no-brainer for the customer.

When viewing this calculus from the perspective of a COSS company, the key to creating sustainable revenue streams is striking the right balance between:

  • providing enough unique value with a free offering to address the customer’s pain points; and
  • anticipating the additional needs that adoption of the free offering will create and developing paid offerings around those needs.
